Meta Tags What are Meta Tags? They are code in your HTML that is invisible to the guests of your web site but are read by some web spiders and search engines. When you are ready, create your Meta Tags using our Meta Tag Generator, free.
The basic syntax for Meta Tags are: Lets get down to business. At the top of your document source there is a small amount of information including your title that is located between <HEAD> and </HEAD>. This is where you will add your new Meta Tags. (anywhere between <HEAD> and </HEAD>) It looks something like this: Add your Meta Tags above the </HEAD> like this: <HEAD> Be sure to begin your tag with < and end your tag with > otherwise your description and keywords will show up on your web site. When choosing keywords: A few years ago webmasters
used to list the same keyword over and over again to get their site listed
closer to the top of a web search. Don't do it! Now days most web spiders
are programed to disregard any word that is listed more than three times.
Instead of using a tag like this: Use one like this: A search that doesn't include the word "book" because the spider is ignoring it is not going to get many hits for a bookstore. The same thing goes for web sites about surfing, outdoors, cars, writing or any other subject you can think of. DON'T LIST THE SAME WORD MORE THAN TWICE!

Popularity: Many search engines include popularity as part of the criteria for the position sites are listed after a search is made. In this context popularity means "the number and quality of pages that are linked to your site". It will help with your search engine position if many websites link to your site. It will help even more to also get several sites with similar content to link with your site. For example, if you have a site about fishing it will be helpful to get other fishing sites to exchange links with you. Simply put, search engine spiders are programmed to conclude that if many sites are linked to your website then your site must be important enough to be one of the first ones listed. Return to Top Keyword Density: It's important that your keywords match your content. For example, if one of your keywords is 'boat' make sure the word 'boat' is in your content. It's helpful if the word 'boat' is used several times within the content of the page. Including keywords in your meta tags that do not exist in your content is not helpful and may serve to dilute the value of your important keywords. Note: Should you think about cheating, resist the temptation! Do not list the same word over and over and over again on the same page. Search engine spiders are programmed to search out cheaters. Sooner or later it will get around to your site and you will be removed completely from the index. In the long run you will gain nothing and may lose much.
